3 Inch Diameter Squat Box Working Drawing

The turning sequence is the same as the other boxes and is repeated here for completeness.

Box Turning Sequence

Over-fitting Lids

The Lid

1.

Cut the blank to length and mount between centers.

2.

Turn to a rough cylinder. True up each end and part in for attachment to a scroll chuck.

3.

Mark the parting cut for the lid and part off with a narrow parting tool.

4.

Mount the lid in the scroll chuck via the short spigot turned in step 2. Using the back-hollowing technique, or other hollowing method, hollow ou the lid. If the lid is being rough turned, leave at least 3/8” in the walls and 1/4” in depth.

5.

Using a straight tool, cut in to make the friction joint. The depth must be 1/16” or more longer that that planned for the base. Check that this cut is straight with inside calipers. Adjust the cut as necessary.

6.

Using a round-nose scraper with a long left edge, clean up the end grain in the lid. Leave a narrow flat transition element at the base of the slip joint. Leave a pip in the center of the lid if desired for extra strength. Or make a clean dome shape in the lid.

7.

Mark on the outside, the depth of the slip joint.

8.

Sand and finish the inside of the lid.

The Body

9.

Remove the lid and mount the body of the box in the scroll chuck. True up the body with a skew of gouge and then true up the end..

10.

Rough fit the lid at this time by cutting a taper that just fits inside the lid.

11.

Hollow out the body. See step 4 regarding rough turning.

12.

Clean up the inside of the body with a round-nose with a long left side.

13.

Sand and finish the inside of the body.

14.

Fit the lid to the body with sufficient friction to allow the whole to be turned. Complete turning the outside of both the lid and the body.

15.

Sand the outside of the lid and the body. If there are beads at the join, move the lid off the joint slightly to allow the beads to be sanded round.

16.

Install a waste block in the chuck for making a jam-fit chuck. Reverse the body on this chuck.

17.

Turn off the bottom of the body. A skew chisel is useful for making a rim for the body to sit on as well as for shear scraping the bottom.
